This year, the theme is 'Alice in Wonderland'. Months before the concert, the teachers pulled all their resources together to come out with beautifully choreographed dances, songs, skit and poem. Elyse would come back from school everyday and showed us her dance movement excitedly. She was also chosen to recite a poem.
As a mother of 2 kids, this was my first kindergarten concert. I was eagerly waiting for the day to arrive - to watch my darling showcase her best talent in front of the crowds.
Unfortunately, Elyse fell sick 5 days before the concert. Oh no! We brought her to the doctor and prayed for her to recover speedily. Thank God for answered prayer. It was amazing to see her recuperated from her illness after one day.
Finally, the day has arrived. The children were instructed to arrive in school at 8am instead of the usual 8:30am. The parents are advised to put on make up for their children. Low and behold, I took up that challenge (who else if not the mother?) and for the first time in Elyse's life, her face was 'painted' with beautiful colours.
When we arrived in school that morning, the classrooms were packed with nervous parents and teachers. Some of them were helping the children to put on their make up (if they have not done so at home), some tied up their hair, some changed them to their dance costumes, and of course, some snapped lots and lots of pictures - trying to captured the moment. When all have been duly prepared, the parents were ushered to the hall to wait for the show of the day!
Andrew and I, together with Erwyn, went for the concert together. Initially, Pastor Ricky was supposed to say the opening prayer. However, we were shocked to find out that one of the teachers' mother has just passed away that very morning. Pastor Ricky has gone to visit the family and thus, Andrew was invited to lead in the opening prayer.
We were expecting Teacher Siew, the deceased's daughter, to be away after hearing the news. However, as dedicated as she is, she decided to stay behind until the concert is over. Thank you so much, Mrs Siew! Our deepest condolences to you and your family. By the way, she is the class teacher for Elyse.
The concert kicked off with a Welcome Speech by Mrs Lucy Tan, the Principal of the Kindergarten followed by a speech from Mrs Devi Ellaganathan, the Committee Member of the Kindergarten. The crowd was thrilled to see the four students welcomed the audience with four difference langauges - English, Bahasa, Mandarin & Tamil. After all, we are living in a multi racial society.
The students donned colourful costumes and performed a medley of songs that brought the crowd to much joy and smile. Most importantly, the students have fun while performing their well-rehearsed songs and dances. Their colourful costumes, designs, looked magnificent and gave an added zest to that morning. The elegant and graceful movements of the performers reflected the student's pride and confidence, plus their skills, grace, talent and stamina.
As the concert was coming to an end, the graduation class were presented their awards. I was surprised to be called up to the stage to give away prizes to the children who have won their colouring contest. And Elyse was one of them! How incredible to give away prize to my own daughter on the stage! WOW!
A Grand Finale involving all the children and teachers of the kindergarten brought the concert to an end. The audience were delighted with the students' performance and expressed it at the close of the concert with thunderous clap. The Annual Concert & Graduation 2012 was a huge success and praised by many who attended. Some parents commented that this is one of the best concert thus far.
A big Thank You to The Chicken Rice Shop for sponsoring the lunch for the parenst and the kids. Last but not least, we really appreciate all the effort and hard work from the teachers. May the Lord continue to bless the works of their hands as they train this young generation of leaders.
